It's a great outing if you have young kids and/or a stroller or folks with mobility challenges. My dad was in town for a visit, so we took a drive out and enjoyed the sunny day there. Please note you do need a NW Forest Pass for this trail. You can buy one at the visitor center near the trail (US Forest Services Visitor Info; 69805 State Route 906). But also note that it might not always be open, so your best bet is to pick one up on town. Most evenings in mid-September, at dusk, the birds put on an aerial show, looping and swirling and filling the sky until finally, they start dropping into the chimney. Once a season, the community puts on a special night with a spaghetti feed, education displays, etc. But most nights during the season are worth a visit: the birds are truly the main attraction. One tiny round island seemed esp appealing, if you like the idea of tiny islands. In researching it, I believed it to be Vendovi Island. Vendovi is a 200-acre island, population two, and recently because accessible to the public. I will admit up front what I soon figured out: Vendovi is not the island I had been seeing on my hike. (Neither is anything in this shot, this is just the morning view from the Leapfrog Water Taxi I took to Vendovi.) It was, however, still a good day, and, at least until other boaters and visitors showed up later, a unique opportunity to be nearly alone on this tiny island. You can learn more about hiking Vendovi in my trip report on the WTA site. While I was a bit too late for a real show of wildflowers, it is supposed to be a great spot to see them in the spring, as there are no deer there to chomp them. I have also taken a pickled herring class there in the past. Their classes are really reasonably priced (this one was $10), and I always like the opportunity to visit this kind of local community organization. It's used in a medicinal tea for ailments like vericose veins and hemorrhoids. The blossoms make a lovely edible garnish.
